Audiovisual archives

8.1      Film and video

The National Archives is the public repository for Namibian audiovisual heritage and receives legal deposit of audiovisual productions. It is equipped with coolroom storage for this material.

Access to the film and video collection is currently limited due to two factors:

  • The “master” collection (MR and MV series) consists of fragile carriers which are not yet digitized and should be preserved in best condition before eventual digitization
  • There is currently no replay equipment for 35 mm films, 8 mm films, U-matic videos and Betacam videos available.

However, VHS videos in the “show collection” series (SV) and DVDs may be viewed with assistance from the staff.

Due to the unavailability of viewing equipment, there is a vast backlog of uncatalogued video material (ca.4,500 cassettes), mainly originating from the former Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
