The Private Accessions cover a wide range of materials received from non-governmental sources (and in some cases, material from governmental sources that cannot be considered government records). In particular, the following types of material are received as private accessions:
- Records of non-governmental organizations, clubs and professional associations
- Records of private businesses
- Church records
- Private papers of individuals (correspondence, diaries)
- Original scientific research records (field diaries, raw data)
- Collections from individuals (photos, postcards, ephemera, newscuttings, library material)
- Copies of archival material from other archives (photocopy, microfilm, digital)
- Oral history recordings
The “Archives of Anti-Colonial Resistance and the Liberation Struggle” (AACRLS) was a special project (2001-2010), co-funded by the Republic of Namibia and the Federal Republic of Germany with additional input from the Government of Finland, which collected the same types of material but with a special focus on the Namibian struggle against colonialism and apartheid. It also contains many materials from abroad, including the Namibian exile experience and the international solidarity and support movement.
The “Small Private Accessions” (SMPA) are a sub-series of Private Accessions that was introduced for easier housekeeping / storage of small amounts of material.
A chronological listing of private accessions is available as Archival Guide E.2. For many private accessions, detailed finding aids (inventories) have been compiled.
All private accessions are indexed on the database ACCES. Detailed indexing of individual files or items in private accessions can be found on the database ACCPT; this is however still very incomplete.
Digital and digitized accessions are accessible in the Reading Room on the public server:
V:\nan\NANACC\ (General accessions A. series and SMPA series)
V:\nan\AACRLS\ (AACRLS series)
To navigate within the digital accessions, it is necessary to look up the accession number in the finding aid or ACCES database.
