National Archives of Namibia Embraces a New Digital Era of Documentary Preservation through UNESCO Support

Namibia’s archives enter the digital age with UNESCO’s support, marking a major step in preserving and digitizing the nation’s documentary heritage.

UNESCO’s Head of Office and Representative to Namibia, Ms. Eunice Smith, hands over digitization equipment to Mr. Gerard Vries, Executive Director of the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, who expressed gratitude for UNESCO’s support.

On 4 June 2025, the National Archives of Namibia (NAN) marked a major step forward in preserving the nation’s documentary heritage with the official handover of high-grade digitization equipment, courtesy of UNESCO’s Memory of the World (MoW) Programme. The event, held at NAN’s restoration facility in Windhoek, celebrated a critical milestone in efforts to safeguard Namibia’s fragile historical records and ensure long-term access for all citizens.
